Horticultural Assistant

The Duchy of Cornwall is a private estate which funds the public, charitable and private activities of The Prince of Wales and his family. The Duchy consists of around 53,154 hectares of land in 24 counties, mostly in the South West of England. The Duchy estate was created in 1337 by Edward III for his son and heir, Prince Edward, and its primary function was to provide him and future Princes of Wales with an income from its assets. A charter ruled that each future Duke of Cornwall would be the eldest surviving son of the Monarch and the heir to the throne. The current Duke of Cornwall, HRH The Prince of Wales, is actively involved in running the Duchy and his philosophy is to improve the estate and pass it on to future Dukes in a stronger and better condition. Main Purpose of Role

Responsibilities:

As a member of the plants team you will support the plants operation including plant care, customer queries and maintaining our plant displays. This role will primarily be based around the glasshouse and our indoor plants areas but will naturally require some outdoor plants duties as well.

The Horticultural Assistant will be responsible for:

  • Giving plant advice to customers based on customer needs
  • Labelling and preparing plants for plant displays
  • Helping support the plant team in keeping plant stock healthy, vibrant and of a high quality
  • Watering plants in the sales area

Will be:

  • Able to demonstrate proven experience in a horticultural environment, specifically indoor plants
  • Confident in giving plant advice with a can-do attitude
  • Comfortable in informing others and asking for information when needed
  • Proud of your working environment and extremely organised in your approach to your work
  • Willing to jump in and help in any aspect of nursery work as required
  • Possessing a positive, fun and capable approach to your work with a smile

Position:

The post reports to the Senior Plant Supervisor.

Working hours and Reward package:

The position is initially being offered on a fixed term 6 month contract for 5 days out of 7 which will include some weekend working. It may lead to a permanent and potentially amended role following this period.
