Camellia 'Dewatairin' (japonica)
Large evergreen shrub. Large rose-pink to red single flowers often with a mass of petaloids in the centre. Early flowering. Good coastal plant. Height 3m. Also known as 'Hatsu-zakura'. One of the Higo group but its tendency to produce petaloid stamens is not well regarded by devotees.

Pot size: 2 litre. Height now: 40-50cm Soil: Acidic, moisture retentive. Position: Ideally part shade, full sun if soil conditions are good. Reasonable tolerance of coastal conditions. Growth rate: 20-30cm a year. Flowering period: 4-6 weeks in spring. Hardiness: Fully hardy though flowers will be damaged by frost.
