Camellia 'Benten Kagura' (japonica).
Large evergreen shrub. Distinctive variegated leaves with irregular narrow white margin. Flowers large double peony form, red mottled white. The bloom illustrated is a very light red which may be because it is flowering out of season, in November, or it may be that what was described as red in old cultivars doesn't compare to more modern types. Early to mid season. Height 2-3m. Variegated leaved form of 'Benidaikagura', the all red form of 'Daikagura'.
Pot size: 5 litre. Height now: 40-50cm Soil: Acidic, moisture retentive. Position: Ideally part shade, full sun if soil conditions are good. Reasonable tolerance of coastal conditions. Growth rate: 30-45cm a year. Flowering period: 4-6 weeks in spring. Hardiness: Fully hardy though flowers will be damaged by frost.
