The Art of Natural Dyeing Series – Indigo & Shibori

Join us as we explore the wonderful world of natural colour in this second of a series of ‘The Art of Natural Dying’ workshops at The Duchy Nursery.

Your journey begins with an introduction to indigo and other natural dyes and their historical perspective.

The making and process of working with indigo – and various other – vats will also be covered and discussed. Throughout the afternoon and for the whole of the second day, students will create a wonderful technical resource in the form of a fully notated reference booklet of colours and hues created with natural indigo on silk, wool, linen and cotton. Experimenting with natural colour on silks using a variety of techniques, including shibori, natural painting and more will take place on the third day. Students will have the opportunity to create a variety of special pieces to take home.

Irene has been absorbed in the world of colour since childhood and delights in sharing the ancient art of natural dyeing with textiles students and practitioners. Based in Cornwall at Falmouth University, her ongoing practice of the subject is developing into research of sustainable industrial colour production as well as the anthropological significance of plant dyes.

Sian is an Environmental Scientist and textile lover with a strong family heritage in the cotton weaving mills of Lancashire. Her company, Lancaster & Cornish marries her two passions through the creation of naturally dyed ribbons and textiles for the wedding industry.
