Duchy Nurseries Winter 2009

All About Us

The Duchy of Cornwall Nursery can realistically claim to be unique. The superb rural location, the range and quality of its plants combined with the expertise of the staff make a visit essential for every gardener and plant enthusiast, both new and experienced.

The nursery offers for sale some 4000 varieties of plants, including many rarely available elsewhere. The majority are grown here on the nursery, from material obtained over the years from around the world. We also buy in material, usually young plants for growing on, from home and abroad.

Our aim is to offer gardeners not just a very wide choice, but more importantly a very good choice of the best garden plants currently available.

Our staff work hard to maintain the enviable reputation that the nursery now enjoys for its quality, service and choice, they are on hand to assist with suggestions and options to make sure you are able to make the right purchasing decisions.

We aim to offer a friendly and pleasant atmosphere for our customers to enjoy their shopping. We offer limited light refreshments, a small but well stocked shop for garden sundries, books and gifts, and plenty of undercover growing and sales space so that even in inclement weather, you'll be able to shop in relative comfort. There are several picnic areas available for use during fine weather.

The attractive and historic town of Lostwithiel nearby offers many visitor attractions as well as pubs, restaurants and cafes. Restormel Castle, built c1100 and owned by the Duchy of Cornwall since 1299, is across the valley from the nursery, from where excellent views of it may be obtained.

Our History

Originally a slate quarry, the site was used for forest tree production in the late 1960's, it started to sell plants to the public in 1974 and since then has gone on to become one of the largest and most well-respected nurseries in the South West. The Nursery is proud to be able to supply some of the plants to the gardens at Highgrove and some of the other Royal estates

The Nursery is part of the Duchy of Cornwall Estate, and is situated across the valley from Restormel Castle, the home of the first Duke of Cornwall.

The Duchy of Cornwall is a well-managed private estate which funds the public, charitable and private activities of The Prince of Wales and his family. The Duchy consists of around 54,521 hectares of land in 23 counties, mostly in the South West of England.

The current Duke of Cornwall, HRH The Prince of Wales, is actively involved in running The Duchy and his philosophy is to improve the estate and pass it on to future Dukes in a stronger and better condition.
